BACKGROUND

Dr. Mary Breen and Mrs. Marjorie Markham co-founded Fallbrook People to People Services on September 1, 1981.  Dr. Breen was the director of the Gerontology Program and the Gateways Health Program (nursing) at Palomar College.  Organizing the employment services was her sabbatical project.  Mrs. Markham was a former vocational teacher and assistant director in charge of personnel of REO Motors in Lansing, Michigan.

Their intent was to assist elderly friends and others who needed help at home following illness or hospitalization.  Adequate health care was a community problem, as convalescent home facilities in Fallbrook could take only about 60 percent of those needing such services, the balance being sent to institutions outside the village, or cared for at home.  Dr. Breen’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) graduates were often employed to provide these needed services.

Additionally, they recognized the need to create an organization that could assist individuals that sometimes have difficulty finding general employment such as young people, retirees, women re-entering the workforce and Spanish speakers.

The above objectives continue as the focus of Fallbrook People to People Services current operations.
